    Nope

The back vented mag makes it a 421 or derivative.

The silver dome further marks it as an MI speaker.

416's are front vented thru a hole in the dust cap.

It's a 423-8Z......... I'm not sure how different that would be from the 421

Sometimes I am so sure of my information I'd be willing to go to the mat for it. This isn't one of those times.

But at one point I sold a bunch of the 423's for Altec that had been redone with 421 kits. I was told they were essentially 421's. A query to why they had been called 423 in the first place came back that the cone was the same but the 423 had a slightly lighter voice coil to give it a tad more mid/high than a 421. Using it with the 807 would thus allow attenuating the HF slightly more, an extra couple dB can make a lot of difference in how long an underspec driver lives.

This was from the guy who did reconing at Altec, NOT a designer, so take it with a grain of salt. It made sense to me at the time and sort of still does.

If I'm understanding you correctly the crossover frequency was shifted up just a bit becasue the 423 could handle those frequencies a bit better than the 807........ or am I not quite following you?

    Re: Is this a 416?

Thanks guys... it was offered to me for 49 bucks... I did not take on it, cause even though I am not an expert and have not help a 416 in my hands... the metal dome cap looked off and then the vented backside had me confused. I assumed it was a form of MI speaker, I wanted to post here for confirmation....

    Thanks again.....
